The Sony Xperia C660X ‘Yuga’ will come to the market as the Sony Xperia Z we are hearing. The source, who has provided credible information over at XDA in the past, says that the Xperia Z will be both water and dust resistant supporting an Ingress Protection (IP) rating of IP55 and IP57 (similar to the Xperia Acro S & Xperia V). The final dimensions of the Xperia Z will be 139 x 71 x 7.9mm.

Interestingly, our source says that the 5-inch 1080p (443 PPI) panel will come with OptiContrast technology, normally found in Sony’s televisions. Sony Mobile has been talking for a while about integrating technologies found in the wider Sony group.

In fact, the Sony Xperia V & Sony Xperia Tablet S already feature an OptiContrast panel. Some reports also suggest that the Xperia T/TX also have this panel, although this has not been confirmed by the company and is on no official spec-sheet. Sony Mobile has not widely marketed OptiContrast on its smartphones, which is why it didn't come to mind when writing this post. We would expect marketing around this feature to be more pronounced with its 2013 range.
The main benefit of an OptiContrast panel is low reflection due to a special resin layer that absorbs any diffused light delivered from the backlight. You are left with a display delivering vivid colours, high contrast levels and a real sense of depth. As always, please take the above with a pinch of salt, but if the rumours are true it looks like Sony Mobile is onto a winner with the Xperia Z (C660X).
