Motorola's Moto Z4 Play is coming soon with water-drop notch, in-display fingerprint scanner and Moto Mod support

Saturday, January 5, 2019

Motorola started the Moto Z series including the Moto Z, Moto Z Force, and Moto Z Play, back in September 2016. The unique element of the Z family is the support for Moto Mod, which basically is case-like accessories that are attached to the rear of the Moto Z smartphones via a series of magnets to provide additional functionality.

The Moto Z family was then succeeded by the Moto Z2 family in 2017 and the latest is the Moto Z3 family launched in 2018. Continuing the legacy, Motorola will be launching the successor to the Moto Z3 Play smartphone soon.

Popular leaker @onleaks (Steve Hemmerstoffer) in partnership with CompareRaja has leaked the first 3D renders of the upcoming Moto Z4 Play smartphone. Do note that the renders shared aren't the official renders created by Motorola, rather are based on the internal information obtained by Hemmerstoffer.

Moto Z4 Play Design

Let's start with the design of the Moto Z4 Play. As we can see in the renders Motorola will finally adopt the water-drop notch style but will implement it similar to the Essential PH-1 Phone. The Motorola branding has been removed from the front-bottom of the Z4 Play compared to its predecessor.

The backside will house a single rear camera with LED flash just below it. Both of which will be placed inside a circular pattern, a Motorola trait. The Motorola branding dimple sits in the center and the Moto Mod support on the bottom. We are expecting Z4 Play to support the upcoming 5G Moto Mod.

Last week we saw renders of an upcoming Motorola smartphone with Moto Z-like design language. The device was being referred to as the upcoming Moto X (2017). Turns out the renders leaked were actually of the next-generation Moto G smartphone, the Moto G5 Plus.

An unannounced Motorola smartphone was on sale earlier today (listing removed) on OLX.ro, which looks exactly like the leaked renders. According to the seller, the device goes by the model number XT1685 and was the upcoming Moto G5 Plus. The seller also attached several images of the device along with the listing, which showcased the device from every angle.

The images leaked revealed that the upcoming Moto G5 Plus follows the Moto Z design-language with circular camera hump on the rear and wide square shaped (more like pill shaped) fingerprint scanner on the front, which might double as home button.

The listing did revealed complete specification sheet of the device. The upcoming Moto G5 Plus is said to come with a 5.5-inch Full HD display with 480ppi pixel density, 2GHz octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor with Adreno 506 GPU, 4GB of RAM and run on Android 7.0 Nougat.

Last year, we saw the launch of next-iterations of Moto G and Moto E smartphones from Motorola. Beside continuing the iteration of G and E series, Motorola had also launched a new series of smartphones called the Moto Z series with premium design and features like Moto Mods (a new way of making phones modular). The company also released a mid-range smartphone in November called Moto M.

Out of all the above phones, a new Moto X smartphone never saw light of day in 2016. Talking of which, Android Authority and @OnLeaks, together, have shared rendered images and 360-degree video of an upcoming Motorola smartphone.

The source itself is not sure about the name of this device, but is referring it as Moto X (2017). Contradicting this, hellomotoHK reports that the device is nor Moto X (2017) nor Moto C.

After announcing Moto G4 for India last month, Motorola has now launched the Moto G4 smartphone in the country. The Moto G4 is priced at Rs. 12,499 and is now available for purchase exclusively from Amazon India. The device comes in two color options: black and white, and features similar specifications as the Moto G4 Plus.

Comparing Moto G4 with G4 Plus, the only difference is that the former does not feature fingerprint scanner and has lower resolution rear camera. Adding Rs. 1,000 more for Moto G4 Plus gives you those above missing features. Looking at the price, it's clear that Motorola will go through tough time for selling Moto G4 in the country, as it will face competition from Redmi Note 3 and LeEco Le 2.
