In a reorganization of Google’s management, CEO Larry Page has appointed Sundar Pichai as the leader of core Google products. Following the same, Pichai will have purview over Google Search, Research, Google+, Commerce, Ad Products, Maps and Infrastructure. He will continue to retain his existing responsibility over Google Apps, Chrome and Android. The executives who were reporting to Page previously will now report to Pichai.

In the memo to staff, Page has noted that these changes will help him focus more on the existing and new products. It is claimed that Page is unable to focus on the bigger picture with a plethora of other duties that are related to product units.

It is pretty surprising that YouTube is left out of this move and CEO Susan Wojcicki will report to Page rather operating as an independent video unit.

Pichai came to the prominence after he took up Chrome in March 2012, when Dave Girouard left the firm and Android, after Andy Rubin stepped down in March 2013.

Pichai was born in Chennai, India in 1972 and attended the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, Stanford University and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Before arriving at Google in 2004, Pichai worked at Applied Materials and at McKinsey & Co.
