Sony was highly anticipated to announce the Xperia Z4, its upcoming flagship smartphone at the CES 2015 tech show, but the device was a no show then. But, this does not mean that the Sony fans have no reason to rejoice as the firm has come up with major announcements targeted at its mobile division that will keep them in the focus for the MWC 2015 tech show to happen in early March.
Notably, there is no information regarding the Xperia Z4 that has been surfacing persistently in rumors for quite sometime. But, it was announced by Michael Fasulo, COO of Sony Electronics that the yesteryear flagship model, Xperia Z3 will be receiving the Android 5.0 Lollipop update starting from February. However, a specific date for the update remains to be known.
Besides the Xperia Z3, other devices such as Xperia Z Ultra GPE have already received the update last month and the concept build of AOSP Lollipop was demoed on the Xperia Z1, Z2 and Z3. It is pretty interesting to know that the Xperia Z that was announced couple of years back will also be receiving the update.
The list of Xperia Z series confirmed to receive Lollipop update include: Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1s, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.
Sony will first roll-out the Lollipop update to Xperia Z3-series devices, which will be followed by Xperia Z2 series devices and then the Xperia Z-series devices. There is no word on when the Lollipop update will be rolled-out to other mid-range Sony Xperia smartphones.
