BlackBerry launched its popular messaging app, BlackBerry Messenger for Android last year in October. Unfortunately the messenger is only available for devices running on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich or higher. Now, BlackBerry has announced that they are busy building a new version of its BlackBerry Messenger for Android for Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3+) users, which will be launched in February.

BBM's head of product and market branding Jeff Gadway made the announcement on BlackBerry's official blog saying, "BBM will soon also be available on Android Devices running Gingerbread(v2.3.3+)."

According to the most recent Android Developer Dashboard published on January 8, 2014, Gingerbread represented about 21 percent of the total Android platform.

There is no word on exact release date, but with beta testing already underway, the launch shouldn't be very far.

"The team at BBM has been busy in the kitchen over the last few months cooking up this special release of BBM for Android smartphones running Gingerbread and are now moving into an external beta ahead of the launch in February," noted Jeff.
