Everyone knows that the newly announced Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch is currently only compatible with Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition. Still folks of Planete Galaxy decided to do a test on Galaxy S4, and the Galaxy S4 managed to connect to the Galaxy Gear without any issue. All the basic functions of Gear were executing and working smoothly using the Galaxy S4.
The official support of Gear for all the above mentioned devices will come as part of the Android 4.3 update. The update brings the Bluetooth 4.0 LE support that the Galaxy Gear requires.
It was assumed that, Galaxy Gear would be only compatible with devices running on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, as that's the Android version which enables Bluetooth 4.0 LE, used by the Galaxy Gear to connect to devices, but as you can see in the video (below), that is clearly not the case. Many functions of Gear are working flawlessly using Galaxy S4, such as changing the clock theme, controlling music playing on the phone from the watch, transferring pictures, and even reminder alerts.
So, if you own a Gear and have a Samsung smartphone with Android 4.2.2 and Gear Manager installed, then you will be able to use all the basic functions until the compatibility update arrives.
