Coming to Android 4.4, Google has revealed that the Android 4.4 update will bring fully supported set of API's to use third-party applications as their default SMS/MMS app officially. In the current version (4.3), it is not possible to allow third-party SMS/MMS apps to become the default messaging app, because of hidden API's that has to be changed or removed first. So, Google has now decided to make it all official and give proper API's to handle SMS related actions.
