It is a trend for the manufacturers to announce miniature versions of their flagship models with downgraded specs. But, Sony did a wonderful job by making the Xperia Z1 Compact without shrinking too much on the specs front. With the launch of this year's flagship model – Xperia Z2, there is no big surprise that Sony will be announcing the Xperia Z2 Compact soon.

And yes, there is news about the same and it is expected to be coming soon. Recently, a new Sony phone with the model number SO-04F has passed through the FCC and considering the model number, the Xperia Z1 and Z1 Compact carry the model numbers SO-01F & SO-02F respectively. Correspondingly, that of the Xperia Z2 and Z2 Compact will be SO-03F and SO-04F.

Besides the model number, photos of the back plate of the handset have also been leaked online by Moumantai, Japanese parts retailer. The images shows a flash similar to the one in Z1 Compact, meaning that the panel is indeed of the Z2 Compact, since the Z1 and Z2 have the flashes under the camera lens.

From the existing rumors, the Xperia Z2 Compact is codenamed Altair and is said to arrive with a 4.3-inch or 4.5-inch HD display, 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 MSM8974AB chipset coupled with 3GB of RAM and 20.7MP Exmor RS rear camera. Other specifications are still a mystery.

Likewise the other high-end Sony phones, this model is also believed to carry the IP55/IP58 certifications for water and dust resistance. Anyway, we will have to wait for a while to know more about the handset.
