Sony has started rolling out the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update for slew of its Xperia Z series smartphones along with the Xperia Tablet Z. The update is rolling out for Sony Xperia Z, Xperia ZL and Xperia ZR smartphones. The 4.4.2 KitKat update for the above mentioned devices was rolled out back in May. As always, the update is rolling out over-the-air and also via Sony PC companion.

Since all the updates are rolled out in batches, it might take sometime to reach on your smartphone. You can manually check for the update by going to Settings > About Phone > Software Update. Sony has skipped the 4.4.3 KitKat update and has moved directly to Android 4.4.2.

The update brings fixes, battery, wifi & email improvements and more. You can read the official change-log below:
  • Upgrade to Android 4.4.4
  • Better battery performance in some background applications
  • Email stability & performance enhanced
  • General improvements to MMS, Calendar, Wifi, Contacts & More
  • All of our latest bug fixes and enhancements
In another news, Sony has revealed that four of its mid-range smartphones which include Sony Xperia L, Xperia C, Xperia SP and Xperia M, will not be getting the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update. The smartphone will stuck at the current latest software version which is Android 4.3 Jelly Bean on Xperia C, L and SP and Android 4.2 on Xperia L.

Though interested users can flash unofficial ROMs on their smartphone like Cyanogemod CM11.
