Android 5.0 Lollipop officially announced, largest release in the history of Android

It's not only the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 which Google unveiled on Wednesday. The search engine giant has also finally revealed complete details of the next iteration of Android. Google showcased the Android L preview earlier this year in June at Google I/O 2014 and now it has officially announced that the next or say the new version of Android would be called, Android 5.0 Lollipop. Lollipop is said to be the largest and most ambitious release of Android till date, both for user experience and developers.

The newly announced Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player devices will be the first to run on Android 5.0 Lollipop. Other Nexus devices which include Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (2012), Nexus 7 (2013) and Nexus 10 along with Google Play Edition devices will be getting the Android 5.0 update in the coming weeks.

The Android 5.0 Lollipop brings major changes to look and feel of Android, all because of the new Material Design language. The update also brings Notifications, Battery, Security, Device Sharing, New Quick Settings, Connectivity, Runtime & Performance, Media, OK Google, Android TV, Accessibility, 68+ languages, Device set up, 64-bit support, Project Volta and a whole lot more.

With the announcement of new version of Android comes the Android 5.0 Lollipop statue outside of Google's HQ in California. You can watch the Android Lollipop Statue unwrapping video at the end of the post.

Material Design
A bold, colorful, and responsive UI design for consistent, intuitive experiences across all your devices
  • Responsive, natural motion, realistic lighting and shadows, and familiar visual elements make it easier to navigate your device
  • Vivid new colors, typography, and edge-to-edge imagery help to focus your attention
Notifications
New ways to control when and how you receive messages - only get interrupted when you want to be
  • View and respond to messages directly from your lock screen. Includes the ability to hide sensitive content for these notifications
  • For fewer disruptions, turn on Priority mode via your device’s volume button so only certain people and notifications get through. Or schedule recurring downtime like 10pm to 8am when only Priority notifications can get through
  • With Lollipop, incoming phone calls won’t interrupt what you’re watching or playing. You can choose to answer the call or just keep doing what you’re doing
  • Control the notifications triggered by your apps; hide sensitive content and prioritize or turn off the app’s notifications entirely
  • More intelligent ranking of notifications based on who they’re from and the type of communication. See all your notifications in one place by tapping the top of the screen
Battery
Power for the long haul
